Window Tint Laws Explained: Staying Street Legal in Nashville

Keeping your car cool and comfortable with window tint is a great idea, especially in sunny Nashville. But before you get your windows tinted, it’s important to understand the legal limits. Here’s a breakdown of the key things to know:

office window tinting nashville tn

How Much Light Can My Window Tint Block?

Windshield:  The top part of your windshield (generally the first 6 inches) can have any level of tint. However, the rest of the windshield must allow more than 70% of light to pass through. This ensures good visibility for safe driving.

Front Side Windows (Driver & Passenger): These windows need to let in more than 35% of light. This allows you to see clearly while still offering some heat rejection and privacy benefits.

Back Side Windows & Rear Window: There’s more flexibility here. These windows can also have a tint that blocks up to 65% of light, allowing for darker tint options if desired.

What Else Should I Know?

  1. Red and amber-colored tints are not allowed on any window in Nashville.
  2. Medical exemptions may be available in some cases if you have a medical condition requiring extra protection from sunlight. Consult your doctor for details.

History of Nashville, TN

Nashville, Tennessee, has a rich and colourful history that begins long before it became the vibrant city known today. Originally, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee. These tribes lived in the region for thousands of years, thriving on the fertile land along the Cumberland River.

In 1779, European settlers led by James Robertson and John Donelson made their way to the area. They established Fort Nashborough, named in honour of Francis Nash, a general of the American Revolutionary War. This settlement eventually grew and was renamed Nashville in 1784 as it evolved into a thriving community. Nashville was officially incorporated as a city in 1806 and became the capital of Tennessee in 1843. During the early 19th century, it developed rapidly due to its strategic location as a port on the Cumberland River and its status as a major railroad centre. This growth was bolstered by the city’s involvement in the cotton trade, although this also meant that Nashville was heavily reliant on slave labor.

Throughout the 1900s, Nashville diversified economically and culturally. It became a hub for education, home to prestigious institutions such as Vanderbilt University and Tennessee State University. The city also played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, with pivotal sit-ins and protests occurring in Nashville during the 1960s. Today, Nashville continues to thrive as a centre for music, culture, and commerce. It celebrates its historical roots while also embracing a dynamic future, marked by urban development and an expanding cultural scene. From its humble beginnings as a frontier settlement to its status as a modern urban centre, Nashville’s history is a testament to the resilience and spirit of its people.
